WHY ORGANIC COTTON?

Organic cotton fabric is naturally soft, breathable, durable, and comfortable. Organic cotton is grown without any pesticides and insecticides, many of which are cancer-causing. Certified organic cotton goes a step further by requiring a third party to keep farmers and manufacturers accountable for their claims of being organic. GOTS-certified organic cotton is the highest level of textile certification and is globally recognized for auditing sustainability at every step of production, from farm to mill to finished garment, and even to packaging. That is why all of our clothing is made of GOTS-certified organic cotton, dyes, and trims.

Over the years, we have considered making our clothing from bamboo, Modal, and other fabrics stemming from "sustainable" plants. However, after much research, we discovered that while bamboo is the fastest-growing plant in the world and grows with very little water and no pesticides, the manufacturing process by which the eco-friendly bamboo plant is made into a wearable fiber is anything but eco-friendly.

Currently, most bamboo fabrics are made via an open-loop chemical process that emits extremely harsh and toxic chemicals into the air, soil, and water...and requires burning, bleaching, and other caustic methods to create that soft finished fabric. Even bamboo and Modal fabrics that are Oeko-Tex 100 certified only certify that the finished product is free of these chemicals, but do not certify or make any reference to the extremely harsh process that turns the plant into a wearable fiber. It also ignores the pollution that is caused by this process.

Until there is a more cost-effective sustainable PROCESS for a closed-loop system to capture the harmful chemicals emitted during bamboo fabric creation, we believe that GOTS-certified organic cotton is the safest and smartest choice for our brand. Knowledge is power, so we encourage you to research and educate yourself on what goes on at various steps of textile production so you can make the best choice for your family.

No system is perfect, but we strive to do what's best given the pros and cons of each decision we make, even if it's not the "trendy" thing to do. In this highly-competitive field of baby apparel, we face tempting design decisions every season, but continue to choose "right" over "popular" because many of the farmers and factory workers who make our clothing are parents too, and we want them to be healthy for their little ones. We also want to keep Mother Earth healthy...because all children deserve beautiful clothes and a better future.
